U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rejected reports that he is considering leaving President Donald Trump’s administration to prepare for a possible run for the White House in 2028.
In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said remaining in the administration until the end of Trump’s term has always been his plan.
“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” Rubio said, declining to discuss speculation about his political future.
The reports emerged following the Republican Party’s losses in the midterm elections, which saw Democrats gain control of both chambers of Congress.
Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, was reportedly among senior administration officials considering leaving their posts ahead of the next presidential election.
A report by Bloomberg News also claimed that Rubio had discussed the possibility of stepping down with White House officials, who reportedly asked him to remain in the administration.
The State Department, however, strongly denied the reports. Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson described the claims as fabricated and insisted that Rubio had not discussed leaving his position.
Rubio previously ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. He has also said he would support Vice President JD Vance if Vance decides to seek the presidency in 2028.
For now, Rubio says he intends to continue serving under Trump through the remainder of the president’s term.
