Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Manila this month to attend the 49th ASEAN Summit, with plans to push forward two major free trade agreements.
Carney aims to conclude trade negotiations with the Philippines and help finalize a separate deal between Canada and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Canadian government expects the proposed Philippines-Canada agreement to triple trade between the two countries by 2035.
The deal could open more opportunities for businesses by lowering trade barriers and improving access to each country’s markets.
Canada and the Philippines recorded CAD3.4 billion in merchandise trade in 2025. Canadian imports from the Philippines reached CAD2.3 billion, while exports to the country totaled CAD1.1 billion.
The two countries began formal trade negotiations in 2025. Both governments have since worked toward completing the agreement before the end of 2026.
Carney and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. renewed that commitment during their meeting in Vancouver in July. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy, defence, tourism, and investment.
The leaders elevated bilateral relations to a strategic partnership during the visit.
Beyond the bilateral agreement, Canada is seeking to complete its wider trade deal with ASEAN. The proposed pact would reduce trade barriers and give Canadian companies greater access to Southeast Asian markets.
Canada estimates that the regional agreement could add nearly CAD2 billion to its economy and support about 14,000 jobs.
Carney’s upcoming trip will mark his first visit to the Philippines since becoming prime minister.
The ASEAN Summit will take place in Manila from November 15 to 17, with the Philippines serving as the regional bloc’s chair for 2026.
