US President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama have exchanged sharp criticism on the campaign trail as Republicans and Democrats make their final push before the November 3 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.

Neither president is on the ballot, but both have become prominent voices in the closing days of a campaign dominated by concerns over the cost of living, immigration, trade policies, and the war in Iran.

Their latest exchanges came on Wednesday, October 28, as Trump campaigned in Ohio while Obama rallied Democratic supporters in Georgia.

With all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats up for election, the stakes extend beyond individual races. The results will determine whether Republicans retain control of both chambers or Democrats gain greater influence over legislation and oversight during the final two years of Trump’s presidency.

Obama targets Trump’s economic and foreign policies

Speaking in Morrow, Georgia, near Atlanta, Obama campaigned for Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who faces Republican Representative Mike Collins.

The former president criticized Trump’s tariffs, his administration’s handling of the economy, and the US war with Iran.

Obama also argued that the election was about the conduct of political leaders, not simply competing economic policies.

“There is a moral component to the choices we face right now,” he told supporters.

His speech focused on what he described as a political culture that tolerates dishonesty, intimidation, and the growing influence of wealth.

Obama, who had maintained a relatively low public profile earlier in the campaign, has become increasingly active in supporting Democratic candidates during the final stretch.

His appearances have included rallies in Michigan, Ohio, and Georgia, where he has urged voters to consider how the current administration’s decisions affect their communities.

Trump defends record, attacks Democrats

Meanwhile, Trump rallied Republican supporters in Chillicothe, Ohio, where Senator Jon Husted faces a challenge from former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown.

Trump focused heavily on immigration and criticized Brown’s positions, arguing that Democratic policies had contributed to problems in Ohio communities.

He also defended renovations to the White House after Obama mocked the administration’s interior design choices during an earlier campaign appearance.

Obama had compared the renovations to an extravagant combination of Saddam Hussein’s style and the restaurant chain Cheesecake Factory.

Trump responded by criticizing the condition of the White House during Obama’s presidency, saying repairs and improvements had been necessary.

The exchange became one of the more personal disagreements between the two politicians during the campaign’s closing week.

Trump’s Ohio appearance also drew demonstrators along his motorcade route, while interruptions inside the rally prompted exchanges with protesters.

The president has held more than 20 campaign rallies during October, seeking to mobilize Republican supporters ahead of election day.

Control of Congress hangs in the balance

The midterm elections will decide which party controls the House and Senate for the next two years.

Republicans currently hold a 53–47 advantage in the Senate, counting independents who caucus with Democrats on the Democratic side.

Democrats are seeking gains in several competitive states, including Ohio, Michigan, and Alaska, as they try to challenge that majority.

Control of the House is also being contested, with both parties concentrating resources on competitive congressional districts.

Economic conditions remain a major issue, particularly rising household costs and the effects of higher energy prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

The war with Iran has also become a point of disagreement, with Democrats criticizing the administration’s military decisions while Republicans defend their approach to national security.

Early voting is already underway across much of the country. Approximately 40 million ballots had been cast by October 28, according to figures reported from the University of Florida’s Election Lab.

Final days of campaigning

With election day approaching, both parties are relying on prominent political figures to encourage turnout in closely contested races.

Trump is seeking to preserve Republican control of Congress, which would support his administration’s ability to advance legislation during the remainder of his term.

Democrats, meanwhile, are campaigning to gain seats that could give them greater power to challenge administration policies and conduct congressional oversight.

The increasingly pointed exchanges between Trump and Obama reflect the competing messages being presented to voters.

For now, the outcome remains undecided, with Americans set to cast their final ballots on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
