As the MICHELIN Guide unveils its latest selection of Philippine restaurants, diners are getting a closer look at what separates its coveted Stars, Bib Gourmand distinction and MICHELIN Selected recognition.
The guide’s return for a second year puts the spotlight on the country’s growing culinary scene, particularly in Manila and its surrounding areas, as well as Cebu. The 2027 selection is set to recognize restaurants for their cooking, consistency and distinct dining experiences.
Among its most recognized distinctions are the MICHELIN Stars, awarded to restaurants for the quality of their cuisine. One star recognizes high-quality cooking, two stars highlight excellent cuisine worth a detour, while three stars are reserved for exceptional cooking considered worth a special journey.
The Bib Gourmand, meanwhile, recognizes establishments that serve good food at moderate prices. Unlike the Stars, which focus on culinary excellence, this distinction highlights places where diners can enjoy quality meals without the cost associated with fine dining.
Another category, MICHELIN Selected, features restaurants recommended by the guide’s anonymous inspectors for their quality and distinctive food experiences. These establishments do not necessarily hold a Star or Bib Gourmand distinction, but their inclusion signals that they are worth discovering.
The guide also gives special awards to recognize individuals and establishments making notable contributions to the restaurant industry, including achievements in sustainability, service, cocktails and emerging culinary talent.
In the Philippines, the inaugural 2026 selection recognized 108 establishments across Manila and its environs and Cebu. These included nine restaurants awarded MICHELIN Stars, 25 Bib Gourmand recipients and 74 MICHELIN Selected establishments.
The latest edition offers another opportunity to showcase Filipino cuisine, from traditional regional dishes to contemporary interpretations that combine local ingredients with modern techniques.
For diners, the distinctions provide different ways to explore the country’s food scene, whether they are looking for a special-occasion meal, an affordable neighborhood favorite or a restaurant recognized for its distinctive approach to cooking.
