MANILA, Philippines — A simple visit to BreadTalk turned into a heartwarming discovery for a Filipino customer who witnessed two nuns collecting what appeared to be bags of bread, drawing attention to the bakery chain’s reported food donation initiative.

Facebook user Makiwander shared the encounter online, expressing surprise and appreciation after finding that the bread she intended to purchase was already being gathered.

“Bibili sana ako ng tinapay, pero hinahakot na nila sister!” she wrote.

Moved by the experience, Makiwander encouraged others to support BreadTalk so the bakery could continue helping communities in need.

“Grabe, let’s support BreadTalk whenever we can so they can continue being a channel of blessings to more people,” she said.

“Masarap na almusal para sa mga tinutulungan,” she added, thanking BreadTalk Philippines for the initiative.

The encounter has brought attention to BreadTalk’s reported practice of distributing unsold baked goods to charitable organizations rather than allowing them to go to waste.

The bakery chain has previously supported food assistance programs in the Philippines, including partnerships with charitable organizations serving underserved communities.

Project PEARLS, a nonprofit organization helping vulnerable families, has publicly acknowledged receiving bread donations from BreadTalk for its hunger relief activities.

However, the claim that all BreadTalk branches donate 100% of their remaining baked goods has not been independently confirmed.

The photograph and Makiwander’s account also do not establish whether the bread being collected was part of a formal donation arrangement.

Nevertheless, the experience highlights the potential value of redirecting surplus food to communities where it can help supplement daily meals.

For Makiwander, what began as an ordinary trip to buy bread became an opportunity to recognize and encourage an act of generosity.
