MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has renewed its call for the Chinese Embassy in Manila to exercise restraint in its public statements, warning that confrontational language could further weaken trust between the Philippines and China.

In a statement Thursday, October 22, DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel said the embassy’s recent remarks were damaging efforts to improve diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The department criticized what it described as the embassy’s “escalatory and undiplomatic tone and language,” stressing that such exchanges undermine mutual understanding and cooperation.

Despite the ongoing tensions, Ratonel emphasized that the Philippines continues to value its relationship with China. However, she maintained that foreign diplomatic missions must communicate responsibly and conduct themselves in a manner that supports constructive engagement.

The latest warning follows a series of public exchanges involving Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan and Philippine officials over Beijing’s military capabilities and the country’s maritime disputes with China.

On October 19, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro summoned Jing to formally convey Manila’s objection to his earlier remarks suggesting that China could easily prevail if it chose to use military force.

The DFA described those statements as provocative and unacceptable, saying they could worsen an already sensitive diplomatic relationship. It also reminded foreign envoys to respect Philippine officials and lawmakers carrying out their duties.

The Chinese Embassy subsequently disputed the Philippine government’s interpretation of Jing’s comments, accusing the DFA of taking his statements out of context. Jing had also emphasized that China preferred peace and would not choose to use force.

Amid the diplomatic disagreement, the DFA reiterated on Thursday that the Philippines remains committed to its One China Policy.

Under the 1975 Joint Communiqué between Manila and Beijing, the Philippines recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China.

The DFA previously clarified that this policy does not prevent the Philippines from maintaining economic, cultural and other practical cooperation with Taiwan.

The statement reflects Manila’s position that maintaining diplomatic relations with Beijing does not prevent the Philippines from raising objections to statements it considers inappropriate.

The DFA has maintained that disagreements between the two countries should be addressed through established diplomatic channels, with communication kept open even on sensitive issues.
