Government agencies are strengthening efforts to revive the local fiber industry in Negros Oriental, combining business development support and textile innovation to help local producers expand their markets.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Science and Technology in the Negros Island Region (DOST-NIR) renewed their call for closer cooperation during the opening of the 2026 Buglasan Trade Fair in Dumaguete City on October 16.

The trade fair returned after a nine-year hiatus, bringing together 25 local producers showcasing crafts, home and lifestyle items, and woven textiles made from indigenous and natural fibers.

Featured materials include abaca, coconut coir, pineapple fiber or piña, sinamay and cotton, highlighting the range of resources that local artisans can transform into marketable products.

DTI-NIR Acting Director Esperanza Melgar said stronger partnerships are essential to help entrepreneurs improve product quality, strengthen their businesses and reach more customers. The agency continues to support micro, small and medium enterprises through programs focused on competitiveness, product development and sustainable growth.

Meanwhile, DOST-NIR Regional Director Naomi Cossette Luis announced plans for the Philippine Textile Research Institute to establish a regional yarn production and innovation center and a national textile fiber innovation hub in Negros Occidental.

The proposed facilities would enable locally sourced cotton, abaca and other natural fibers to be processed into yarn within the region, reducing the need to transport raw materials to the institute’s facilities in Manila.

Locally produced yarn could also give handloom weavers better access to natural materials as alternatives to synthetic fibers, helping strengthen the supply chain for traditional textiles.

DTI-Negros Oriental Director Juliet Banogon said the trade fair’s return is part of efforts to revitalize the fiber sector and create more livelihood opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Beyond preserving traditional weaving skills, the partnership aims to turn the region’s natural resources and cultural heritage into stronger economic opportunities for farmers, artisans and small businesses.

The trade fair runs until October 22 at Robinsons mall in Dumaguete City.
