Alberta separatists are challenging Premier Danielle Smith’s pledge not to hold another independence referendum if voters choose to remain part of Canada in the upcoming October 19 vote.
Smith made the commitment during an interview with CBC News, saying she would not call another referendum on separation for as long as she remains premier if the pro-Canada side wins.
The statement drew criticism from some separatist advocates, who said the independence movement would continue regardless of the outcome.
Cory Morgan, who leads the Pathway to Independence group, questioned whether Smith could guarantee that another referendum would never happen, noting that political circumstances and public opinion could change over time.
Morgan suggested the premier’s remarks reflected a firmer position as the referendum campaign entered its final stretch.
Under the October 19 vote, Albertans will choose between remaining in Canada and beginning the process toward a second, binding referendum on provincial separation.
Smith has previously expressed support for Alberta remaining in Canada, while also advocating for greater provincial autonomy and changes to the province’s relationship with the federal government.
Separatist organizers, however, have indicated that a vote against independence would not necessarily end their campaign. They argue that the movement’s future will depend on political developments and whether support for separation grows.
The dispute highlights the divide between the provincial government’s position on another referendum and separatists who say their push for independence could continue beyond the upcoming vote.
