Canada is set to introduce a new process for people seeking asylum, changing how immigration applications are submitted and processed starting November 3.
The new system will require asylum claimants to provide additional information as part of the application process, as the Canadian government moves to strengthen and streamline its immigration screening procedures.
The transition to the new system will begin at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on November 2. People who have already submitted their asylum claims through the existing IRCC Portal before the deadline will generally not need to resubmit their information.
However, applicants who have only started their applications but have not yet submitted them will need to complete the new requirements when the updated process takes effect.
The changes will also affect people making asylum claims at Canada’s borders. Some claimants may be required to provide their personal and family information again if their applications have not yet been connected to an IRCC Portal account.
The immigration changes come as Canada continues to overhaul its asylum system amid efforts to manage the volume of claims and improve processing.
Under the country’s immigration framework, asylum seekers must establish that they face persecution or a serious risk of harm if returned to their home countries. Claims that meet eligibility requirements are referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada for a decision.
The updated application process is therefore expected to become an important step for people seeking protection in Canada, particularly those preparing to submit claims after the November 3 rollout.
For prospective asylum seekers, immigration advocates and organizations assisting newcomers, understanding the new requirements will be important as Canada transitions to the revised system.
