PHILIPPINES – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has warned senators that it could eventually run out of operational ships if the government does not continue investing in its maritime fleet.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan raised the concern during a Senate hearing on the agency’s budget, highlighting the need for sustained funding to maintain and expand the country’s maritime capabilities.

The warning comes as the Coast Guard continues to handle a wide range of responsibilities, including maritime security, search and rescue, law enforcement and monitoring of Philippine waters.

The PCG has also been expanding its presence in strategic areas amid increasing maritime activity, placing additional demands on its ships and other assets.

Gavan’s remarks underscored the challenge of keeping the fleet operational as vessels age and maintenance and replacement requirements increase.

The Coast Guard is seeking continued government support for its fleet and other capabilities to ensure it can maintain operations and respond to the country’s growing maritime security and safety requirements.
