High water levels force another delay in Tarlac bridge opening

Philippines – The reopening of a key bridge in Tarlac has been delayed again, this time because of dangerously high water levels that could put workers and motorists at risk.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the planned opening cannot proceed while floodwaters remain high, as engineers continue to monitor conditions around the bridge.

The delay comes after earlier damage to the structure disrupted an important route connecting Tarlac City with nearby communities. The Department of Public Works and Highways has been working to restore access, including the construction of a temporary steel bridge.

For residents and motorists who rely on the crossing, the latest setback means another wait before normal traffic can resume.

But officials say safety remains the priority. Opening the bridge while water levels are still dangerous could put both the public and construction crews at greater risk.

The situation also highlights the continuing challenge of restoring infrastructure in areas affected by severe flooding, where even completed emergency works can face delays when water conditions remain unpredictable.

For Tarlac communities waiting for a reliable connection, the message is clear: the bridge may be ready for people, but the water is not ready to let them cross.
