Carney’s Liberals sweep North Vancouver-Capilano in key byelection win

CANADA – The Liberal Party has secured another victory in a federal byelection, with Braeden Caley winning North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia and helping Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government strengthen its position in Parliament.

Caley, a former senior adviser to Carney, captured the riding after former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson stepped down to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The victory was part of a broader Liberal sweep in three federal byelections held Monday.

The results also saw the Liberals win in Beaches-East York in Ontario and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, giving Carney’s party additional strength in the House of Commons.

The North Vancouver-Capilano result is particularly significant because the riding had been comfortably held by the Liberals, with Wilkinson winning nearly 60 percent of the vote in the 2025 federal election.

The byelection victories come at a critical time for Carney as his government faces heightened tensions with the United States over tariffs and trade.

Carney has framed his government’s approach as defending Canadian interests while seeking to diversify the country’s economic partnerships beyond the United States. The three Liberal wins are being viewed by political observers as a boost to that position.

The results also strengthen the Liberals’ parliamentary position, with the party now holding 173 of the House of Commons’ 343 seats, according to the latest reports.

For Carney, the byelection sweep provides a fresh political boost as his government navigates trade tensions, economic uncertainty and pressure to deliver on its domestic agenda.

The vote was more than a local contest, it gave Carney’s Liberals a stronger hand at a crucial moment for Canada.
