CANADA – Extreme heat is prompting communities to find new ways to protect vulnerable residents as dangerously high temperatures become a growing public health concern.

Community groups are helping people cope with heat events by organizing check-ins, sharing cooling resources and making sure those who may be more vulnerable are not left alone during periods of extreme temperatures.

Experts warn that extreme heat can pose serious health risks, particularly for older adults, children and people without reliable access to air conditioning or other cooling options.

Cooling centres and public facilities can provide temporary relief when temperatures become dangerous, while community volunteers help ensure vulnerable residents have access to water, information and assistance.

The growing emphasis on community support reflects the need to prepare not only for individual heat events but also for a future where extreme heat could become more frequent and severe.

As communities face longer and more intense periods of extreme heat, cooperation and preparedness are becoming increasingly important.

When the heat becomes dangerous, staying safe is no longer just an individual effort—it becomes a community responsibility.
