CANADA – The rapid expansion of data centres is raising concerns over their growing demand for electricity and water as artificial intelligence and other digital services continue to expand.

These facilities require large amounts of power to operate and cool thousands of servers, putting additional pressure on electricity grids and raising questions about the need for new energy infrastructure.

Water use is another concern, particularly for data centres that rely on water-based cooling systems in areas already facing limited water supplies.

At the same time, the industry is attracting investments and creating economic opportunities, with developers looking to areas with reliable power, cooler climates and access to renewable energy.

The growing demand has prompted governments and communities to weigh the economic benefits of new data centres against their potential impact on power supplies, water resources and the environment.

The issue is expected to become more significant as the continued growth of artificial intelligence drives demand for increasingly powerful computing infrastructure.
