PHILIPPINES – The Sandiganbayan has allowed detained Senator Jinggoy Estrada to undergo a medical evaluation for his knees despite opposition from the prosecution.

The anti-graft court’s Fifth Division approved Estrada’s request to have a knee X-ray at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan on August 26.

Estrada has been experiencing persistent pain in both knees, which has recently made it difficult for him to walk. He had previously been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and joint effusion.

His orthopedic doctor, Dr. Jose Fernando Syquia, recommended the X-ray to determine whether his condition has worsened.

The prosecution opposed the hospital visit and suggested instead that a portable or mobile X-ray service be brought to the New Quezon City Jail.

The court, however, ruled that Estrada may proceed with the medical procedure and ordered him to be accompanied by security escorts, his immediate family, legal counsel, and attending medical personnel.

All medical, transportation, and related expenses will be shouldered by Estrada.

The senator was also ordered to return to the New Quezon City Jail no later than 3 p.m. on the same day. Photography, video recording, and social media postings related to the procedure are prohibited.

Estrada is facing plunder and graft charges before the Sandiganbayan in connection with an alleged kickback scheme involving flood control projects.
