VANCOUVER – The Filipino community in Vancouver has achieved a major milestone after Vancouver City Council unanimously approved a motion on July 30 to establish a dedicated interim space.

The decision includes a $50,000 improvement grant, serving as a critical bridge toward the eventual construction of a permanent Philippine Community Center.

Scheduled to open by late August or early September at the Robson Street Library, the new facility marks the culmination of extensive negotiations.

This historic effort traces back to a motion filed on December 10, 2025, which mobilized the community across the city and set the stage for this collective victory.

According to Community Leader Genette Mujar, the interim space is a vital hub designed to combat senior isolation, support newcomers, a space to celebrate Filipino culture, and ensure a lasting legacy for future generations.

While the immediate goal is to operationalize this interim facility, organizers emphasize that it is a practical stepping stone rather than the final destination.

The unanimous vote reflects unwavering support from Mayor Ken Sim and City Council.
