PHILIPPINES – Actress Nadine Lustre finally triumphed after more than a year of a legal battle against online harassment.
She stated during a press conference on July 8 for Love, Siargao that a man violated Republic Act No.11313, or the Safe Spaces Act (Bawal Bastos Law), due to his vile comments about her on social media.
Lustre said that she was not planning on filing a case but after a while, people made her realize that she deserved justice. She also stated that fans came to her defense, but the harasser doubled down and continued with more unpleasant messages.
The actress shared that they worked to identify and locate the person before finding him, and that she met him in April before she left for Siargao. The court then ordered him to undergo rehabilitation and gender sensitivity seminars as part of his penalty.
According to Lustre, she wants to send a message that the internet should be a safe space for everyone and that for harassers, there will always be a way for them to be traced, whether they are anonymous or public.
