LONDON – Alex Eala is set for a high-stakes rematch as she faces Australia’s Maya Joint in the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday, July 2.

This upcoming clash carries significant weight after their dramatic 2025 Eastbourne final. Eala had four championship points, only for Joint to stage a stunning comeback and win 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10).

Eala has expressed a strong desire to turn that past heartbreak into redemption, noting her intention to improve on the aspects of her game that faltered last time. The stakes were raised further when Joint defeated a resurgent Serena Williams in a grueling three-set battle on Centre Court, proving she is in formidable form to challenge the Filipina.

Eala enters the second match with renewed confidence following her convincing first-round victory over Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa, a 6-1, 6-2 win that marked her first-ever main-draw triumph at Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old described the experience as playing before a “home crowd,” overwhelmed by the hundreds of Filipino supporters who queued from as early as 3 a.m. to secure tickets for Court 12.

With a spot in the third round on the line, Eala is ready to test her limits against a tough but familiar opponent.
