7.8 magnitude earthquake hits Mindanao

SARANGANI, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS) reported a 7.8 magnitude earthquake offshore the Sarangani province on June 8, 2026. With it, a tsunami warning was raised for the coastal areas of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basila, Zambonga Del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. released a statement following the disaster. He announced that the Office of Civil Defense and the NDRRMC were coordinating on the proper response for the affected areas. DSWD has also been ordered to ensure both the relief goods and the evacuation centers, and authorities were dispatched to check on the damage on the remaining infrastructure.
Classes have also been suspended in all levels across affected areas in Mindanao until further notice.
