MANILA — The one-year-old child who was put on leash and was treated like a dog by his own mother is now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

In an radio interview, Marilyn Tigas, chief of the DSWD office in Bataan said that the baby was taken by two social workers from his mother.

The boy, whose case is now under investigation, was brought to a residential center for children.

“Ayaw ibigay ng magulang pero hindi pwede. Yun po ang nakita naming magandang kailangan pong gawin, alisin po muna ang bata sa magulang,” Tigas said.

(The parents would not surrender the baby but that’s not possible. That’s the best solution we could think of. To remove the baby’s custody from his parents.)

As to how long the department will be keeping custody of the child, Tigas said it is now up to the DSWD Region 3.

In the same interview, Tigas explained that the mother who uploaded photos of the child did not know that it will go viral on social networking sites.

The photos were uploaded with the caption:

”bago ko nga palang aso…dami kong tawa [dito] grabe.”

(My new dog… I’m laughing so hard on this!)

“They made fun of it. Akala nila walang magiging reaction,” Tigas said.

(They made fun of it. They didn’t expected the reaction.)

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said that the National Bureau of Investigation is now looking into the case.
