NDRRMC verifying 52 reported deaths amid Tino onslaught

MANILA – The 52 reported deaths attributed to the onslaught of Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi) are undergoing validation, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

In its latest situational report, the agency said 50 of the reported fatalities are from Region 7 (Central Visayas) and two in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas). The number is more than double the earlier reported 26 deaths.

The number of injured persons, still undergoing confirmation, are placed at 10 while those missing were estimated at 13.

A total of 203,595 families were affected, or 705,549 persons residing in 2,799 barangays in Mimaropa, Region 5 (Bicol Region), Region 6 (Western Visayas), Negros Island Region, Region 7, Region 8, and Caraga.

As of posting, 10,981 families are seeking temporary shelter in 3,894 evacuation centers, while another 27,698 families are being assisted outside- these are the residents, who chose to stay with relatives.

About 70,540 families in seven regions were preemptively evacuated, the disaster response agency said.
