GENEVA – The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday lifted the public health emergency status for mpox in Africa, more than a year after the outbreak began.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the decision followed the recommendation of the organization’s mpox emergency committee, which met on Thursday.
The outbreak, he noted, brought new transmission patterns and virus strains but caused only limited international spread.
Updated recommendations have since been issued to affected countries in the region.
