MANILA – Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on June 12 to discuss Philippine priorities and areas of cooperation with the UN, said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday.

Manalo reassured Guterres that the Philippines, as a founding member of the UN, is deeply committed to the UN Charter and the work of the UN.

He emphasized the importance of multilateralism, international law, and the rules-based international order.

Guterres then expressed appreciation for the credible, valuable and positive contributions of the Philippines and confirmed the excellence of Philippine-UN relations.

He thanked the Philippines for being a solid partner of the UN in peace and security, development, human rights and the environment.

During their meeting, the two officials touched on the paramount issue of climate change, as well as financing for development, peacekeeping, and the UN Security Council, among other matters.

The DFA said they looked forward to having innovative solutions to the shortfalls in financing climate adaptation and the loss and damage fund.

They agreed that financing and investments are needed in the Philippines to address its climate vulnerability.

Guterres conveyed his regards to President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr, and wished the Philippines a happy Independence Day.

Manalo was accompanied by Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN, and other officers of the Philippine Mission to the UN.
