JORDAN, Guimaras — Guimaras Island’s age-old dream of having bridges to link Panay and its backdoor neighbor Negros Occidental remains in suspended animation, and which has put off a number of people resigned that it may never happen in their lifetime.

But the spellbinding proposal of putting up cable cars though exciting and yet not far-fetched to carry people high above the body of water separating mainland Iloilo City and Jordan Wharf in Guimaras has captured the imagination of everyone else including Provincial Governor Samuel Gumarin.

Cable cars may be a fitting substitute for the bridges, the latter’s stupendous budgetary needs (Php 54 billion) probably not feasible at this time said Gumarin.

But the young province born only 18 years ago has not ceased to find ways to effect a change albeit it has since grown economically by leaps and bounds.

Although he declined to mention names, the governor expressed optimism the grandiose plan could really push through with some investors showing keen interest in it.

In the absence of a firm declaration tending to inspire confidence in the proposed bridges, Gumarin said that he would welcome the entry of cable cars in his province, believing that they would eventually prove to be of great help to his constituents, particularly when there is a typhoon signal during which time pump boats are not allowed to travel and ferry passengers.

Likewise, cable cars may be useful in conveying people in times of emergencies.

Moreover, Gumarin is quick to say should the plan comes true to form, the provincial government of Guimaras will be very supportive as he envisions the cable cars spurring the economy and boosting tourism in the island-province.
