Tragedy Strikes Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Day Celebration; Filipino Community Mourns

A festive evening meant to honor Filipino heritage turned tragic Saturday night when a vehicle plowed through a crowd at Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, leaving several dead and many injured. A man in his 30s drove a car in an incident near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street around 8 p.m. The Filipino-Canadian community is in shock after this event.

Authorities quickly arrested the driver but did not explain his actions. As the investigation continues, local officials and the Philippine Consulate General have expressed their sympathy and highlighted the community’s strength during this difficult time. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim described the tragedy ashorrific.He expressed his support for the victims and the larger Filipino community.

Eyewitnesses described a frightening scene as the vehicle sped through pedestrian areas, causing chaos and damage. Survivors reported hearing loud crashes and frightened screams, with some seeing injured children.

Filipino community organizers reported that Black performers faced racism before the event. Despite this, the Lapu Lapu Day celebration, named after a respected Filipino hero, aimed to promote unity, diversity, and resistance against oppression.

As investigations continue, the community rallies together, drawing strength from the spirit of Bayanihan—a testament to the enduring resilience that the celebration was meant to honor.
