ROME – The Vatican’s Office of Protocol reported Thursday that 130 international delegations are confirmed to attend the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday morning.

These include around 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs, reflecting the global impact of the late pontiff.

Following the funeral Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, a solemn procession will accompany the Pope’s remains on foot to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Vatican Press Office Director Matteo Bruni explained that the walking pace will allow mourners to bid farewell to the Pope along the route.

The burial itself will be a private, modest ceremony in accordance with Pope Francis’ wishes for simplicity.

A live broadcast will cover the procession and stop at the entrance to the Marian basilica, respecting the intimate nature of the burial.

Security measures

In preparation for the high-profile event, Italy’s Ministry of Defense is implementing heightened security measures.

These include the deployment of anti-drone systems, Eurofighter jets, and a naval destroyer stationed off the coast of Fiumicino to ensure air and maritime safety.

In addition to the systems capable of jamming and countering drones, the armed forces will also make available a destroyer off the coast of Fiumicino and fighters to ensure air safety in the skies of the entire region.
