MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed deep concern over the health of Pope Francis, following reports that the Holy Father is currently battling a serious illness.

In a statement, Marcos joined the world in extending prayers for the pope.

“Nakakalungkot na marinig ang malubhang karamdaman ni Pope Francis. Sa mga sandaling ito, ka-isa tayo ng buong mundo sa panalangin para sa kanyang kalakasan at paggaling (It is sad to hear of the serious illness of Pope Francis. In these moments, we join the whole world in prayer for his strength and recovery),” Marcos said.

The President also shared words of encouragement for the 88-year-old pontiff.

“Nawa’y patuloy siyang patnubayan at palakasin ng Panginoon upang magpatuloy sa kanyang misyon ng pananampalataya at pagmamahal sa sangkatauhan (May the Lord continue to guide and strengthen him to continue his mission of faith and love for humanity),” he said.

Pope Francis admitted to the hospital on Feb. 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties. Initially treated for bronchitis, the pope was later diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

According to latest medical update, his blood values are improving because of transfusions. However, early signs of mild kidney failure have been detected, though they are currently under control.

“Pope Francis is alert and oxygen is still being administered. His blood values are improving, thanks to transfusions. There is an initial slight renal insufficiency,” the Vatican News posted.
