ISTANBUL – John Tinniswood, recognized as the world’s oldest man by Guinness World Records in April, has died at the age of 112, the group said Tuesday.

Born on Aug. 26, 1912, in Liverpool, Tinniswood’s life spanned more than a century of profound historical events.

“I was quite active as a youngster, I did a lot of walking. Whether that had something to do with it, I don’t know,” Tinniswood said as he reflected on his life earlier this year.

“I just take it in my stride like anything else. Why I’ve lived that long, I have no idea at all,” he said on his 112th birthday, Sky News reported.

He died peacefully Monday at the Hollies Care Home in Southport, surrounded by music and love, according to his family.

He moved to the rest home shortly before his 100th birthday, where his kindness and enthusiasm inspired staff and residents.

The family expressed gratitude to the caregivers who supported Tinniswood.

“John always liked to say thank you. So on his behalf, thanks to all those who cared for him over the years,” it said.

They remembered him as “intelligent, decisive, brave, calm in any crisis, talented at maths, and a great conversationalist.”

Tinniswood’s remarkable life included service during World War II, where he worked in an administrative role for the Army Pay Corps. His responsibilities included logistical tasks, such as locating stranded soldiers and organizing food supplies. After the war, he worked as an accountant for Shell and BP before retiring in 1972.

He married Blodwen Roberts after meeting her at a dance in Liverpool. The couple was together for 44 years until she died in 1986. Tinniswood is survived by his daughter, Susan, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In becoming the world’s oldest man earlier this year, Tinniswood succeeded 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela. He is now remembered as the fourth-oldest British man in recorded history.
