Environment Canada issues severe weather warning, winds up to 90km per hour

As a blizzard begins to take shape outside, the City of Iqaluit has shut down the Nunavut capital.

The city put out a notice at 10 a.m. advising residents to stay off the roads and take shelter.

It is also suspending water delivery, waste management and garbage pick-up and closing facilities to the public until further notice.

Schools are also closing.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has also issued a severe weather alert for Iqaluit.

It predicts snowfall between 20 and 35 centimetres with wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour.

The city says residents on trucked water and sewage should reduce their water consumption and wastewater output.
