BOC to open new Bilibid facility for ‘very important prisoners’

MANILA – In order to properly segregate the prisoners, the Bureau of Corrections will now start building a P15 million facility at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

The inmates will be segregated and classified according to several classifications such as high-risk, highly violent, suicidal and others, according to BuCor director Franklin Jesus Bucayu.

The said bungalow facility will be situated inside the penitentiary’s maximum security and is eyeing to house up to 50 inmates.

“We’re targeting completion of the facility in three to four months, so it will be operational, at the earliest, by March,” Bucayu told reporters.

Meanwhile, the said facility will first shelter the 19 prominent inmates who were earlier reported to have been transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation’s detention facility.

The transfer was made following the raid on their quarters which were also reported to have contained illegal drugs, cash and other luxury items.

Bucayu also said that a bidding process was already conducted after the Department of Justice has approved the move to secure funds form the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

The new facility will be similar to regular jails where inmates are confined inside and are not allowed to roam freely.
