Alex Eala misses W100 main draw
MANILA – Alex Eala’s bid in the W100 Shrewsbury came to an abrupt end on Monday night after Great Britain’s Maia Lumsden pulled off a 6-1, 7-5 shocker in the second round of the qualifying draw.
Lumsden, currently ranked 578th in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association, upset the 248th ranked Eala to book a spot in the main draw.
Lumsden put on a clinic in the first set and took advantage of Eala’s errors, especially in the double fault.
Eala still gave a fight in the second set and forced an extension, but Lumsden still prevailed.
Eala could only win 51 percent of her first serves and 48 percent of her second serves even as she committed five double faults against Lumsden’s three. Lumsden also scored an ace on Eala.
Lumsden will take on fellow qualifying draw survivor Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei in the first round of the main draw.
Garland defeated Romania’s Andreea Prisacariu, 6-2, 6-1, to enter the main event.
