Soldier killed by NPA rebels in Sorsogon

MANILA — A trooper from the 9th Infantry Battalion was shot and killed by three New People’s Army (NPA) rebels at Barangay San Antonio, Barcelona, Sorsogon, Sunday morning.

1st Lt. Clint Antipala, 903rd Infantry Brigade spokesperson, said the attack was unprovoked as the victim, Cpl.

Zaldy Bengua, and a companion, who managed to escape, were just headed to Sorsogon City to send some money to their loved ones.

The two had just received their year-end bonuses, Antipala said.

They were aboard a tricycle along with three civilians when they were fired upon by the rebels at around 7:45 a.m. The civilians were not hurt.

Antipala said the local police are now investigating the incident and pursuit operations against the rebels are underway.
