DOTC to modernize transport options with Uber

MANILA — The Department of Transport and Communications (DOTC) on Tuesday said on Tuesday that it will start its partnership with app-based transport service Uber in a bid to modernize the country’s transportation options.

Uber is an application that allows users to flag down the nearest Uber-registered vehicle for hire, electronically.

“Government welcomes tech solutions to transport problems, and fortunately, Uber also wants to work with us to make it happen,” Transportation Secretary Jun Abaya said.

Meanwhile, MMDA chair Francis Tolentino gave his full support on the DOTC’s move.

“Uber or hybrid carpooling is a well-meaning technology-driven effort intended for public safety and convenience. That’s why people are patronizing it,” he said.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Winston Ginez also shared insights on how the department can update transport regulations to allow new technology to improve user experience of passengers.

It also pledged to draft a set of provisions that will contain more modern solutions to the country’s traffic problems.
