MANILA — To ease the traffic congestion in Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) plans to put up a temporary flyover along C.P. Garcia Avenue.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said he is already exchanging talks with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson on the construction of the infrastructure.

Tolentino said that according to Secretary Singson, it will take three to four months to put up the bridge.

The MMDA chief said he will push the plan due the increasing number of vehicles taking students to Ateneo de Manila University, Miriam College, and the University of the Philippines.

“It is the traffic flow inside the Ateneo that create impact to the traffic flow along Katipunan,” he explained. There are at least 1,200 vehicles passing the Ateneo campus daily, according to the MMDA.

The MMDA on Monday started the implementation of another traffic scheme along Katipunan Avenue while the construction of the bridge is not yet in progress.

Under the scheme, two traffic lights at two intersections opposite the Gate 3 of the Ateneo and Miriam College will be turned off from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

”They would test first the scheme for weeks and “in case, it creates more traffic problems, we will adjust again,” Tolentino said.

He added that to make the flow of traffic orderly, they will position traffic enforcers at chokepoint areas. The rest of the day, the traffic lights will be switched on in the area.
