Pacific Hurricane Rachel Swirls Far Off Mexico

MIAMI — Hurricane Rachel is swirling in the Pacific far off Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and poses no threat to land amid forecasts it will weaken in coming hours.

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds were around 85 mph (140 kph) early Sunday. It was centered about 470 miles (760 kilometers) west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja peninsula and moving north-northwest at about 6 mph (9 kph).

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm might strengthen some early Sunday before slowing and weakening overnight.

Forecasters add that Rachel is expected to become nearly stationary and likely weaken to a tropical storm sometime Monday.
