MANILA – The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) will roll out a series of activities, including an extensive information drive on various housing programs, in line with the observance of the national shelter month.

“We will take this month as an opportunity to strive harder in performing our mandate of providing decent, affordable, resilient homes and sustainable communities to 81 percent of Filipino families who continue to dream of having houses of their own,” Secretary Eduardo del Rosario said in a statement on Thursday.

The housing department will be conducting a web-wide education and information campaign promoting this year’s theme, “Ensuring resilient homes and sustainable communities for a better normal,” along with the issuance of relevant publication and communication materials, especially on consumer welfare.

“This year’s celebration is especially poignant. As we spend more time in homes as an effect of the extended quarantine, we now see the necessity of having safe and resilient shelters and sustainable communities which serve as havens against natural and health hazards,” he said.

While del Rosario considers that “owning a house is a right, homeownership is an option”, it is the responsibility of the housing department to help and support every Filipino family who wishes to have their own houses.

The department will release a video message of del Rosario as well as the list of activities on October 5.

Proclamation No. 662 declares the month of October every year as National Shelter Month, which recognizes the housing program as a vital tool to the overall development of the country and the enhancement of social, economic, and spiritual well-being of Filipinos.
