Jimmy Alapag to play in Asian Games
MANILA — One more time for the Philippines! Jimmy Alapag finally gave in to the pressure from supporters and announced that he will be playing for the national team in the Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea.
Via his Twitter account, Alapag posted this message on September 11 to the delight of his fans, “One more time… #ImIn #ParaSaBayan #GilasPilipinas #AsianGames2014.”
Prior to the Asian Games, Alapag earlier announced that he will no longer participate in international games. However, the Mighty Mouse changed his mind after discussions with Gilas Coach Chot Reyes.
Likewise, Reyes also posted a tweet on Thursday night to confirm that the Gilas’ team captain will play for the national team in the Asian Games.
Alapag, who will turn 37 this year, seems ready to give out the torch to younger players. His spot was originally filled up by Jared Dillinger.
However, pressure coming from fans and supporters won him over, especially after his spectacular performance during the FIBA World Cup where the Philippines won for the first time in 40 years.
Reyes did not confirm yet who will be cut from the roster given that Alapag will play.
But for the fans, this serves as a new hope in the light of the recent disqualification of center Andray Blatche.
