North Vancouver Mayor Linda Buchanan said that the council voted to allow drinking in public which includes certain parks in the city.

Buchanan was pleased to announce that the council passed the bylaw on June 2, which seeks to aid restaurants and bars affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis.

“This summer we need to find new ways to connect while distancing. This is just one way we’re working to make NorthVan a city for people,” she also wrote on Twitter.

She further said that this is the North Vancouver city is the first jurisdiction in BC to pass a bylaw such as this one.

“This summer city parks will be an extension of everyone’s own backyard,” Buchanan added.

Responding to a tweet that concerns “litter and irresponsibility,” the mayor said that her perspective that treating adults as adults will make them behave “that way and be responsible.”

“Which includes managing waste and recycling if picnicing. Other bylaws remain: noise, littering, public intoxication, good neighbour and laws re: age of consumption, drinking driving,” she wrote.
