Comelec to craft resolution promoting level-playing field in polls
MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will be crafting a resolution to promote a level-playing field between the rich and the poor candidates in the coming 2016 elections.
This is following the Supreme Court’s (SC’s) decision junking the rule on stricter airtime limits.
Comelec Chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. said that to ensure the passage of the said resolution, they will be crafting in accordance with SC’s ruling.
Despite the ruling, Comelec still insisted that there should be a limit on the campaign spending among the candidates.
“There may not be a limit on airtime of political ads but there is a limit on spending. So we can still go after these candidates through their campaign expenses,” he said.
“I feel bad because the limitation we wanted was just to equalize the playing field. Now, the rich politicians are free again … but the Supreme Court knows better so we can’t do anything about it,” he added.
