The kin of the 15-year-old teenage Romanian girl released to the public the transcript of desperate calls his niece made to the emergency 211 the day after she was reported missing.
Alexandru Cumpanasu, the uncle of Alexandra Macesanu, said her niece’s family allowed the release of the transcript via a Facebook post on July 30 “for the entire country to see the rottenness of a criminal system and the courage of this incredible child,” as translated in a report by Romania Insider.
Based on the written version of the calls, Macesanu phoned the emergency 211 thrice to report to them that she has been kidnapped, raped, and beaten. She first made her call on July 25 at 11:05 a.m., followed by another call at 11:07 a.m.
On her third call, at 11:12 a.m., the victim told authorities to “Please stay with me on the phone, I’m afraid,” but the police said they “can’t stay” on the line because they have other calls.
Macesanu was told to stay where she was at as a police crew was on their way to find her. The authorities also told her to “calm down” as she was heard crying in the background.
Some international media reported that they have been unable to verify the transcript.
Meanwhile, the suspect, Gheorghe Dinca, admitted that he killed Macesanu who went missing on July 24, and another 18-year-old girl who went missing since April, according to his legal counsel, lawyer Alexandru Bogdan.
Macesanu’s death has sparked public outrage, saying that the girl could have been saved if the authorities were able to immediately respond to the phone calls. This also caused the resignation of Romania’s interior Minister Nicolae Moga and the sacking of chief of police and several other officials.
Quoted as saying in a report by the Associated Press, President Klaus Iohannis said, “Romanian institutions failed in their duty to protect the fundamental right to life.
“Those responsible will have to face harsh punishment. Sentences, however harsh, do not bring back lost lives. We must identify means to prevent such tragedies from ever being repeated,” he added.
