POC denies PHISGOC involvement for upcoming SEA Games

Amidst Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s statements that he does not want the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) Foundation, Inc. to be involved in organizing the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games hosted by the country in November, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) reassured the national government that they have no involvement with the body led by Alan Peter Cayetano.

In response to Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo stating, “Duterte said that he doesn’t want [PHISGOC], he wants the government (organizing the event). He said there’s a lot of corruption in that private (foundation) which is why it ruins the organization, that’s why he wants the government (to organize),” POC President Joey Romasanta stated, “PHISGOC has been existing without the recognition of the POC. Mr. (Jose) Cojuangco was ousted in February, then they incorporated PHISGOC in July of last year. We only found out its existence in March,” which means that Cayetano did not include POC board members and PSC commissioners in the leading body as originally agreed on.

He elaborated, “So it means that from July last year to March this year, they have been operating without board approval from the POC executive council. That’s why when we asked Mr. [Ricky] Vargas about it, all he did was to tender his irrevocable resignation. He didn’t shed light on his involvement,” concluding, “We’re still in the dark as to the activities and past dealings of PHISGOC Foundation.”

The POC is still awaiting the upcoming July 28 elections for their new head bodies after the resignation of numerous members, therefore denying Malacañang’s invitation to meet with PHISGOC as well and suggesting to set it to a later date.

Originally, the PHISGOC was set up primarily for the SEA Games, then being used for any other international games in the future. Its purpose is to distribute and manage funds from sponsorships, donations, grants, and subsidies.
