American diver David Bonuchi banned 2 years for using amphetamines at world championships

LAUSANNE, Switzerland—Swimming’s governing body says it has banned American diver David Bonuchi for two years for taking a banned stimulant at the 2013 world championships.

FINA says it “discovered that during the period” of the event held in Barcelona, Spain, Bonuchi “used a prohibited substance amphetamine” without a medical exemption.

The governing body did not state that the 22-year-old diver tested positive.

Bonuchi’s ban was applied from July 21, 2013—the day he placed 10th in the synchronized 10-meter platform event with Toby Stanley.

The former University of Missouri student was the Southeastern Conference Male Diver of the Year in 2013.
