UAAP women’s basketball NU beats DLSU

MANILA — National University (NU) overwhelmed defending champion De La Salle, 77-55, to remain unbeaten at the end of the UAAP Season 77 women’s basketball tournament first round of eliminations on Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Gemma Miranda had 20 points and 17 rebounds while Afril Bernardino added 17 points and eight boards as the Lady Bulldogs never trailed to fan their unbeaten run to seven games.

Camille Claro was the lone bright spot for the Lady Archers (6-1) with 11 points.

It was the first meeting by both teams since La Salle beat NU in Game 3 of the championship series last season.

Lore Rivera scored 14 points and grabbed 20 boards while Maica Cortes added 13 points as University of Santo Tomas tripped Adamson University, 59-47, for a 4-3 record in third spot.

In other games, Ateneo beat University of the East, 50-35, while Far Eastern University downed University of the Philippines, 65-61.

The Lady Eagles, Lady Tamaraws and the Lady Falcons are tied in fourth with identical 3-4 records, the Lady Warriors are in seventh place with a 2-5 slate while the Lady Maroons bring up the rear after going winless in the first round.

Danica Jose rediscovered her old form with a double-double outing of 16 points and 18 rebounds to help Ateneo end a four-game slide.

Angel Arellado finished with 18 points while April Siat and rookie center Claire Castro contributed 14 points apiece for FEU.
