Filipino boxer Jerwin Ancajas is hailed champion over Japanese Ryuichi Funai after a technical win with sharp punches throughout seven rounds during the International Boxing Federation super flyweight division at the Stockton Arena in California last Saturday, May 4.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ancajas, also pegged as “Pretty Boy,” won through a technical victory within the 115-pound division after ringside physician Dr. Gary Furness was asked by the referee to examine Funai’s condition. Because Furness said that Funai’s symptoms hinted a brain concussion, the match had to end.

In a report of Philboxing.com, Furness explained, “There was a lag in Funai’s right eye when I asked him to look sideways. The right eye moved slower than the left which is a sign of a possible brain concussion. I asked him to look sideways. He was fine then. On my second examination, he was fine looking up and down. But when I noticed the lag in his right eye, I advised the referee to stop it.”

Because of his victory, Ancajas now stands 31 wins, one defeat, and two draws. In reaction to his win, the young Filipino athlete elaborated, “In my last two fights (a decision over Jonas Sultan and a draw with Alejandro Santiago), I wanted to finish it with one punch.

I didn’t fight smart. I didn’t respect my opponents.”

He continued, “Against Funai, I went back to what I did to knock out my first four challengers. I took my time, used my jabs, did my combinations, moved side to side. And I had no difficulty making weight because I followed my nutrition program,” adding, “My condition now is so much better. Before, even through the weigh-in, I was already experiencing cramps and could not move.”

Ancajas applaud his opponent as well, saying in Filipino, “He’s good. He’s a scientific boxer, who’s willing to take punches.
