Retired world champion American boxer Floyd Mayweathe, Jr. has been seen at his rival Manny Pacquiao’s home country of the Philippines, specifically visiting the rehabilitated island of Boracay for leisure.

The 42-year-old initially landed in Manila on his private jet “Air Mayweather” last Sunday, March 31 before heading to the beach soon after. He was coming from the Maldives and was met by businessman Lester Codog. Vans Philippines Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and close friend Wendell Cunanan posted photos with the boxer, mingling with the locals and shooting hoops at the mall in Station 3. He also confirmed that they are staying at the Movenpick Resort and Spa.

Mayweather’s visit to the country further sparked rumours of an upcoming rematch of “The Fight of the Century” between the American competitor and Pacquiao, to which he later confirmed that he does have plans to meet with the Filipino athlete during his stay.

The rivals’ previous encounter was in January, where they ran into each other during a National Basketball Association (NBA) game. Despite there being no confirmation on a rematch, Pacquiao told the media, “If [Mayweather] returns to being active as a boxer, then maybe we can fight. I’m open with it.”

Mayweather retired from professional boxing in 2017 with an unblemished 50-0 record. His father, Floyd Senior, however, thinks that the fighter will return to the sport again soon, telling Las Vegas Sports Network, “Right now I have to say myself that Floyd’s still got the fire in him. I’m not just saying it because it’s the way it is. When a person says he’s retired, he’s retired. But it seems right now to me that he’s doing that (supposed to be fighting) pretty much every month.” Floyd Sr. added, “I don’t know whether he (is training) sometimes. I know one thing, he’s going to get back in the gym and terrorize some things… I’m saying that because it’s going to happen, for real.”

The last time Mayweather was in the Philippines was May 2018.
