‘Glenda’ death now 20

MANILA — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the number of deaths rose to 20 while 505,000 people were affected in Luzon and the Visayas due to strong winds, waves and rains spawned by Typhoon “Glenda”.

In its report on Wednesday evening, NDRRMC said death toll was recorded with, 10 in Region 4-A or Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), five in Region 4-B or Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), two in Region 3 or Central Luzon, two in Region 5 or Bicol Region and one in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas).

Most of the deaths are attributable to being hit by a fallen tree, electric post, collapsed wall and drowning, it said.

The NDRRMC also said the number of injured persons rose to seven in the National Capital Region (NCR), Region 1 (Ilocos Region), Bicol Region, and Central Luzon , while five are still missing in Regions 4-B, Bicol Region, and 6 in Western Visayas.

NDDRMC said that 105,520 families or 505,264 persons were affected in NCR, Regions 3, 4-A, 4-B, 5 and 8..

Of these, 76,659 families or 423,119 persons were displaced and being served inside 605 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also said 4,927 passengers of 46 vessels, 463 rolling cargoes and 66 motorized bancas and 15 vessels were stranded as of 6 p.m. on July 16 at ports in Central Luzon, Western Mindanao, Coast Guard District of Palawan, Bicol, Southern Tagalong region, Northern Mindanao and Eastern Visayas due to typhoon Glenda.

A total of 15 roads and three bridges in Regions 2, 4-A, 4-B, 5, 7 and CAR were rendered impassable due to incurred damage and floodings.

Meanwhile, three provinces were placed under a state of calamity, the provinces of Albay, Canarines Sur and Camrines Norte.
