MANILA — The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) in the House of Representatives threw their support on Monday to President Benigno S. Aquino III by not supporting any impeachment complaint against him.

UNA spokesman and Navotas City Rep. Toby Tiangco said that for “delicadeza,” they will not endorse any impeachment complaint because the first beneficiary of such move would be Vice President Jejomar Binay who is their titular head.

“Should the impeachment prosper, the recipient is no other than VP Binay. We will inhibit. We will not participate in the votation in the committee level,” Tiangco told reporters in a press conference.

He said that the party stand came a little bit late because the vice president had earlier decided not to support any move to impeach President Aquino.

“You know it should be automatic not to participate or inhibit because if there is conflict on rules, affected people need to inhibit,” Tiangco explained.

Makati City Reps. Abigail Binay and Monique Lagdameo echoed Tiangco’s statement, saying they do not want to be accused of riding on the situation to gain power.

Neophyte Laguna Rep. Marisol Aragones, Cebu City Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia and AGRI Party-list Rep. Delphine Gan Lee said they will abide by the party stand to inhibit and abstain in the voting if it goes further.

“May be it is better to focus our attention to more important issues that will make our country move forward,” Aragones told reporters.
