JBC comes up with shortlist for SC justice post

MANILA — The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Monday came up with its shortlist of nominees for the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (SC).

The position was vacated with the compulsory retirement of Associate Justice Roberto A. Abad last May 22.

During its session on Monday, the JBC voted on the shortlist which include Court of Appeals (CA) Associate Justices Apolinario D. Bruselas Jr. and Jose C. Reyes Jr., with similar six votes; Commission on Audit (COA) Chairperson Maria Gracia M. Pulido-Tan, with five votes; and Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 90 Presiding Judge Reynaldo B. Daway, with four votes.

The JBC is set to submit its shortlist to President Benigno S. Aquino III on Tuesday.

President Aquino has up to 90 days from the time of the vacancy within which to appoint the next magistrate of the SC.
