MANILA — The government sees nothing wrong with the National Police’s preparing detention rooms for Senator Juan Ponce Enrile.

In a statement made by President Benigno Aquino III, he commented on the 90-year-old senator’s possible detention room, saying his advanced age should be considered.

“In his press conference while en route to Hiroshima (on June 24), the President emphasized his belief that the courts will be cognizant of fulfilling their obligations and may consider the factor of the advanced age of Senator Enrile,” Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.,said.

Coloma however said that despite the President’s remark, it was not the executive branch who will decide on the kind of treatment to give Enrile.

Following netizens and several other senators’ reaction on the possibility of detaining Enrile in a more comfortable hospital detention facility, Coloma said they have no intention of implementing ‘unequal treatment.

There is no intention to implement unequal treatment. And that lack of equality, that is an issue continuously being addressed as part of the reforms being pushed by the government,” he said.

The secretary also acknowledged the criticisms thrown on the current system of criminal justice inn the country, adding that they are now seeking for ways to reform the flaws.

“We acknowledge that the current system of criminal justice in our country is not perfect, there are many things that must be changed.

That is the why the government is pushing for the needed reforms,” Coloma said.
