OKOTOKS, Alta.—An RCMP officer and a carjacking victim sustained minor injuries during a rampage by an erratic driver who hit a convenience store and eight vehicles before being apprehended.

It all started in Calgary around noon Thursday when a man driving south on Deerfoot Trail crashed into an embankment.

A Good Samaritan pulled over to try and help, but the suspect pulled a knife on him and stole his vehicle.

He then continued south before crashing into a convenience store at a gas station in Aldersyde, Alta., causing significant structural damage.

A few minutes later, he got into another crash, this time with a gravel truck in Okotoks.

That’s when a woman with a baby pulled over to check if he was OK, and had a knife pulled on her.

She managed to get herself and the baby to safety before the suspect stole her vehicle.

RCMP used spike belts, and were eventually able to stop the suspect and make an arrest.

They also took the suspect to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the various crashes.

Investigators believe drugs may have played a role in the incident. A 44-year-old Calgary man now faces a number of charges.
